ILLITERACY
A STUMBLING BLOCK
Education is a fundamental factor in achieving social and economic uplifment. It is an essential tool to fight against economic insecurity in rural areas. Education can play an instrumental role in two different ways: through economic production and through social change. Education can improve the capacity of individuals to live a decent life and to escape from economic insecurity. Education improves rural populace’s capacity of diversity assets & activities, to access information on health and sanitation, to make full use to government schemes, to enhance knowledge of scientific advancement in agricultural and thereby increasing productivity in agricultural sector. No country can achieve sustainable economic development without substantial investment in human capital. Education enriches people’s understanding of themselves and world. It improves the quality of their lives and leads to broad social benefits to individuals and society. Education raises people’s productivity and creativity and promotes entrepreneurship and technological advances. In addition it plays a very crucial role securing economic and social progress and improving income generation.
Rural farmers account for the greater
part of the population of any developing country such as India. Rani’s population
is basically dependent on agriculture. The vast Stretches of agricultural land
in Rani is not optimally utilized to drive maximum yield. Lack of knowledge and
information is a major hurdle in achieving maximum agricultural output. Our
farmers are not update about what is happening in areas of improved seedlings,
better methods of cultivation and fertilizer application, pest and weed control,
new advances in livestock production and disease control etc. The lack of
improving agricultural knowledge and information has made our farmers to stick
to their old traditional methods of farming systems and animal husbandry
practice, hence resulting in poor crop and livestock production.
Rani is a classic example of how
illiteracy and lack of environmental awareness, is not only robbing it of its
abundant natural resources but also tap its immense eco-tourism potential. Lack
of education and poverty pushes local people in Rani to aid the illegal logging
syndicate and destruction of the hills. Rani can be an ideal destination for
city dwellers to come and relax in nature’s lap. The same dense forest which is
being exploited by a few timber traders can turn into an eco-tourism hotspot. Trading
on the natural bounty of Rani, we can not only uplift the fragile economic
status of the local people but also save the ecology.
Illiteracy is a stumbling block in
recognizing the immense potential of Rani and taking it on the path of economic
prosperity. Education opens a whole new arena of opportunities. It expands the
horizon of knowledge. There is an urgent need for the people of Rani to
recognize the importance of Education. Children’s should be sent to the schools
and ensure that they don’t drop out midway. Only Education can change the face
of Rani. Even though Rani is just 35 kms from the gateway of Northeast-
Guwahati. It is unable to use this privilege to its advantage. Students outside
school mean they are deprived of the opportunity to learn and acquire skills
for playing a meaningful role in the society. Social exclusion is a great loss
at the individual and societal levels. Most of these out-of-school children
experience poverty and unemployment and some get involved in criminal
activities as well.
